After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city faced the challenge of breathing new life into the site of the former newspaper district not far from the Gendarmenmarkt and Checkpoint Charlie. It had been part of Berlin’s historic cityscape in pre-war times and was completely destroyed during World War II. This task was entrusted to the Pritzker prize winning architect, Aldo Rossi. The building ensemble was constructed from 1994 to 1998. Rossi, a leader of the post modern movement, adopted the traditional pre-war masterplan along with architects Luca Media and Bellmann & Böhm.
